American Foreign Policy Under George Washington As Americas first president, George Washington practiced a pragmatically cautious yet successful foreign policy. Taking a Neutral Stance As well as being the father of the country, Washington was also the father of early US neutrality. He understood that the United States was too young, had too little money, had too many domestic issues, and had too small a military to actively engage in a strident foreign policy. Still, Washington was no isolationist. He wanted the United States to be an integral part of the western world, but that could only happen with time, solid domestic growth, and a stable reputation abroad. Washington avoided political and military alliances, even though the US had already been the recipient of military and financial foreign aid. In 1778, during the American Revolution, the United States and France signed the Franco-American Alliance. As part of the agreement, France sent money, troops, and naval ships to North America to fight the British. Washington himself commanded a coalition force  of American and French troops at the climactic siege of Yorktown, Virginia, in 1781.​ Nevertheless, Washington declined aid to France during warfare in the 1790s. A revolution - inspired, in part, by the American Revolution - began in 1789. As France sought to export its anti-monarchical sentiments throughout Europe, it found itself at war with other nations, chiefly Great Britain. France, expecting the US would respond favorably to France, asked Washington for aid in the war. Even though France only wanted the US to engage British troops who were still garrisoned in Canada, and take on British naval ships sailing near US waters, Washington refused. Washingtons foreign policy also contributed to a rift in his own administration. The president eschewed political parties, but a party system began in his cabinet nonetheless. Federalists, the core of whom had established the federal government with the Constitution, wanted to normalize relations with Great Britain. Alexander Hamilton, Washingtons secretary of the treasury and defacto Federalist leader, championed that idea. However, Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson led another faction - the Democrat-Republicans. (They called themselves simply Republicans, although that is confusing to us today.) The Democrat-Republicans championed France - since France had helped the US and was continuing its revolutionary tradition - and wanted widespread trade with that country. Jays Treaty France - and the Democrat-Republicans - grew angrier with Washington in 1794 when he appointed Supreme Court Chief Justice John Jay as a special emissary to negotiate normalized trade relations with Great Britain. The resulting Jays Treaty secured most-favored-nation trade status for the US in the British trade network, settlement of some pre-war debts, and a pull-back of British troops in the Great Lakes area. Farewell Address Perhaps Washingtons greatest contribution to US foreign policy came in his farewell address in 1796. Washington was not seeking a third term (although the Constitution did not then prevent it), and his comments were to herald his exit from public life. Washington warned against two things. The first, although it was really too late, was the destructive nature of party politics. The second was the danger of foreign alliances. He warned neither to favor one nation too highly over another and to not ally with others in foreign wars. For the next century, while the United States did not steer perfectly clear of foreign alliances and issues, it did adhere to neutrality as the major part of its foreign policy.

Thousands of people lost huge sums of money as stock values fell far below the prices paid for the stock. Banks and businesses had also brought stock, and many lost so much that they had to close. To help ease the poverty in the ghettos, black organized cooperative groups. They boycotted stores that had mostly black customers but few, if any, black worker (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Samuelson 53; Smitha 89; Bernanke 57; Sides 35; Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site NP). Most black Americans felt that President Herbert Hoover, a Republican, had done little to try to end the depression. In the elections of 1932, some black voters deserted their traditional loyalty to the Republican Party. They no longer saw it as the party of Abraham Lincoln the emancipator but of Hoover and the depression. In 1936, for the first time, most blacks supported the Democratic Party candidate for President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and helped him win reelection (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Samuelson 53; Smitha 89; Bernanke 57; Sides 35; Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site NP). Roosevelt called his program the New Deal. It included measures of reform, relief and recovery and benefited many blacks. A group of blacks advised Roosevelt on problems the Black Cabinet, included William H. Hastie and Mary McLeod Bethune. Hastie served as assistant solicitor in the Department of Interior, as a U. S. district court judge in the Virgin Islands, and as a civilian aide to the secretary of war. Bethune, founder of Bethune – Cookman College, directed the black affairs division of a federal agency called the National Youth Administration. As a result of the New Deal, black Americans developed a strong loyalty to the Democratic Party (Smitha 89; Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site NP). Blacks deeply admired President Roosevelt’s wife, Eleanor, for her stand in an incident in 1939 involving the great concert singer Marian Anderson. The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a patriotic organization, denied the singer permission to perform at Constitution Hall in Washington, D. C. , because she was black. Eleanor Roosevelt then resigned from the DAR and helped arranged for Anderson to sing, instead at the Lincoln Memorial on Easter Sunday. More then 75,000 blacks and whites attended the concert (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Samuelson 53; Smitha 89; Bernanke 57; Sides 35; Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site NP). During the early 1940s, the NAACP began to step up its legal campaign against racial discrimination. The campaign achieved a number of important victories, including several favorable rulings by the U. S. Supreme Court. In 1941, for example, the court ruled that separate facilities for white and black railroad passengers must be significantly equal. In 1944, the court declared that the white primary, which excluded blacks from voting in the only meaningful elections in the South, was unconstitutional (Smitha 89; Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site NP). Besides taking legal action, blacks used new tactics to attack segregation in public places. In 1943, for example, the Congress of Racial Equity (CORE) launched a sit – in at a Chicago restaurant. In this protest, blacks sat in places reserved for white people (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Samuelson 53; Smitha 89; Bernanke 57; Sides 35; Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site NP). The Great Depression differed in both lengths and harshness from previous depression in the United States. In earlier depressions, business activity had started to pick up after one or two years. But from October, 1929, until Franklin D. Roosevelt became President in March, 1933, the economy slumped almost every month. Business failures increased rapidly among banks, factories, and stores and unemployment soared. Millions of people lost their jobs, savings and home (Smitha 89; Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site NP). From the years 1930 – 1933, prices of industrial stocks fell about 80 per cent. Banks and individuals with investments in the stock market lost large sums. Banks had also loaned money to many people who could repay it. The deepening depression forced large numbers of people to withdraw their savings. Banks had great difficulty meeting the withdrawals, which came at a time when the banks were unable to collect on many loans. Between January 1930 and March 1933, about 9,000 banks failed. The bank failures wiped out the savings of millions of people (Smitha 89). Bank failures made less money available for loans to industry. The decline in available money caused a drop in production and a further rise in unemployment. From 1929 to 1933, the total value of goods and services produced annually in the United States fell from about $ 104 billion to about $56 billion. In 1932, the number of business closings almost a third higher than the 1929 level (Anderson 6). The Great Depression hit the United States – and the world – in 1929. Business firms failed, workers lost their jobs and farmers lost their farms. Banks had made loans to thousands of people who lost their money and could not repay what they owed. The depression also forced large numbers of depositors to withdraw their savings. Banks had great difficulty meeting the withdrawals, which came at a time when they were unable to collect on many loans. Most banks had also invested in stocks and other property that lost value because of depression (Anderson 6). In 1925, about 3 per cent of the nation’s workers were unemployed. The unemployment rate reached about 9 per cent in 1930 and about 25 per cent – or about 13 million persons – in 1933. Many people who kept or found jobs had to take salary cuts. In 1932, wage cuts averaged about 18 per cent. Many people, including college graduates, felt lucky to find a job. In 1932, the New York City Police Department estimated that 7,000 persons over the age 17 shined shoes for a living (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Samuelson 53; Smitha 89). Foreign trade also fell greatly during the Great Depression. The Smoot – Hawley Taft Act of 1930 contributed to the drop. This law greatly increased a number of tariffs. President Hoover signed the law because he thought it would reduce competition from foreign products. But tariffs rose so high that other nations reacted b raising tariffs on U. S. goods (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Samuelson 53; Smitha 89). From 1929 to 1933, prices of farm goods fell about 50 per cent. This drop occurred partly because high tariffs made exports unprofitable. In addition, farmers produced a surplus of crops. The surplus pushed prices down because there was more food than people could buy (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Samuelson 53; Smitha 89). Human suffering became a reality for millions Americans as the depression continued. Many died of disease resulting from malnutrition. Thousands lost their home because they could not pay the mortgage. In 1932, at least 25,000 families and more than 200,000 young people wandered through the country seeking food, clothing, shelter and job. Many youths traveled in freight trains and lived near train yards in camps called hobo jungles (Coy 32). The homeless, jobless traveler obtained food from welfare agencies or religious missions in towns along the way. Most of their meals consisted of soup, beans, or stew and had little nourishment. The travelers begged for food or stole it if they could not get something to ear in any other way. Sometimes they ate scraps of food from garbage cans (Anderson 6; Coy 32). The ragged travelers found clothing harder to obtain than food. Missions gave most of the clothing they had to needy local people. Some of the travelers became ill because they did not have proper food and clothing. Even the sick wanderers had trouble getting help because hospitals aided local residents first (Anderson 6; Coy 32). Many people who lost their home remained in the community. Some crowded into the home of a relative. Others moved to a shabby section of town and built shacks from flattened tin cans and old crates. Groups of these shacks were called Hoovervilles, a name that reflected the people’s anger and disappointment at President Hoovey’s failure to end the depression (Anderson 6; Coy 32). In 1932, many farmers refused to ship their products to market. They hoped a reduced supply of farm products would help raise the price of these goods. Such farmers’ strikes occurred throughout the country, but they centered in Iowa and the surrounding states (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Smitha 89). Severe drought and dust storms hit parts of the Middle West and Southwest during the 1930s. The afflicted region became known as the Dust Bowl, and thousands of farm families there were wiped out. Many farmers went to the fertile agricultural areas of California to look for work. Most who found jobs had to work as fruit and vegetable pickers from extremely low wages. The migrant families crowded into the shacks near the fields or camped outdoors (Coy 32). President Hoover believed that business, if left alone to operate without government supervision, would correct the economic conditions. He vetoed several bills aimed at relieving the depression because he felt they gave the federal government too much power (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Samuelson 53; Smitha 89; Bernanke 57; Sides 35; Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site NP). Hoover declared that state and local governments should provide relief to the needy. But those governments did not have enough money to do so. In 1932, Congress approved Hoover’s most successful anti – depression measure, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC). This government agency provided some relief by lending money to banks, railroads and other large institutions whose failure would have made the depression even worse. However, most Americans felt that Hoover did not do enough to fight depression. They elected Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932 (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Samuelson 53; Smitha 89; Bernanke 57; Sides 35; Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site NP ). Roosevelt believed the federal government had the chief responsibility of fighting the Great Depression. He called Congress into a special session, now called the Hundred Days, to pass laws to relieve the depression. Roosevelt called his program the New Deal (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Samuelson 53; Smitha 89; Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site NP). The laws established by the New Deal had three main purposes. First, they provided relief for the needy. Second, they aided nationwide recovery by providing jobs and encouraging business. Third, the laws tried to reform business and government so that such a severe depression would never happen in the United States again (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Samuelson 53; Smitha 89; Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site NP). In February 1933, the banks of Detroit failed. The resulting blow to public confidence was so great that depositors throughout the country withdrew money from their banks. These runs ruined many banks (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Smitha 89). To stop the panic, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared a nation wide bank holiday that began on March 6, 1933. All banks closed until federal officials examined the books of each. No bank was allowed to reopen until it has been found in good condition. Many never reopened. Roosevelt’s action restored public confidence in banks and ended the crisis (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Smitha 89). The Glass – Steagall Banking Act of 1933 further strengthened people’s faith in banks. This law, sponsored by Senator Carter Glass of Virginia and Representative Henry B. Steagall of Alabama, created the FDIC to insure bank deposits. The act also restricted banking practices that seemed risky (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Smitha 89). Congress created several agencies to manage relief programs. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), established in 1933, employed thousands of young men in conservation projects. The Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA), founded in 1933, gave the states money for the needy. The Works Progress Administration (WPA), created in 1935, provided jobs in the construction of bridges, dams and schools (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Samuelson 53; Smitha 89; Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site NP). The government also aided recovery by spending large sums of money. This federal spending gave businessmen the confidence to also begin spending. The economy improved after money began to circulate. The government also increased trade by lowering tariffs on certain imported products that they imported from the United States (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Samuelson 53; Smitha 89; Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site NP). Congress created several agencies to supervise banking and labor reforms. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), founded in 1933, insured bank deposits. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), established in 1935, worked to prevent unfair labor practices and aid the development of labor unions. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), created in 1934, attempted to protect investors from buying unsafe stocks and bonds. In 1935, Congress passed the Social Security Act to provide money for retired and unemployed people (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Samuelson 53; Smitha 89; Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site NP). Some Americans who kept their jobs during the Great Depression managed to live comfortably. Many of those who had a steady income could afford to buy an automobile, clothes and other products that were out of reach for most people. Steak cost about 29 cents a pound, and gasoline about 18 cents a gallon. People who had enough money found that, because of low prices, conditions were better during the depression than they had been in the 1920s (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Samuelson 53; Smitha 89; Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site NP). The New Deal program not only helped relieve the depression but also renewed the confidence of Americans in the government. But about 15 per cent of the nation’s working force still did not have a job in 1940. The Great Depression did not end in the United States until 1942, after the country had entered World War II. The tremendous increase in production of war materials provided so many jobs that the unemployed rate in the United States fell to about 1 per cent in 1944 (Coy 32; Smitha 89). In Canada, the national economy depended on the export of grain and raw materials. Canadian farmers and exporters suffered huge losses after other countries increased tariffs on imported products. Many Canadian companies closed, and unemployment rate rose from about 3 per cent of the labor force in 1929 to about 23 per cent in 1933 (Coy 32; Smitha 89). Richard Bennett, who served as prime minister from 1930 to 1935, had little success in his efforts to relieve the depression in Canada. W. L. Mackenzie King succeeded Bennett and adopted programs similar to those of Roosevelt to fight the depression (Coy 32; Smitha 89). The Great Depression caused many changes in the United States. It brought new laws that gave the government far more power than at any previous time in the nation’s history. It also changed the attitudes of countless Americans toward various aspects of life. New government policies that resulted from the New Deal increased federal control over banks and the stock market. Laws of the New Deal also gave the government more power to provide money for the needy. Ever since the depression, both Democratic and Republican administrations have broadened the powers of the federal government. For example, the government now provides hospital and medical insurances for the aged. The government may also regulate price and wage increases to try to keep the cost of living from rising (Smitha 89). The depression also changed the basic philosophy of the United States government in spending money. Before the depression, the government tried to spend the same amount of money it collected. But to support the New Deal, the government used deficit spending – that is it spent more money that it collected. This policy greatly increased the national debt. The government has continued to rely on deficit spending during most years since World War II ended in 1945 (Smitha 89). The depression changed the attitudes of many Americans toward business and the federal government. Before the depression, most people regarded bankers and business executives as the nation’s leaders. After the stock market crashed and these leaders could not relieve the depression, Americans lost faith in them. The government finally succeeded in improving conditions. As a result, many Americans decided that the government – not business – had the responsibility to maintain the national economy (Anderson 6; Coy 32). Many people changed their basic attitudes toward life because of the suffering they experienced during the depression. They previously had believed they would have a reasonably happy life if they worked hard, saved money, and treated others well. The depression shattered that belief. The situation seemed especially hard to understand because there appeared to be no reason for so many of the things that happened (Anderson 6). The depression probably affected young adults more than any other group from a psychological viewpoint. These men and women encountered great difficulty in finding a job and starting a career. If they did find a position, they had little chance of promotion because employers eliminated jobs throughout the depression. Consequently, many young adults lost confidence in them selves and lowered their ambitions (Coy 32). Some people who lived through the Great Depression became more concerned with material possessions than did people born after that era. The depression forced people to worry about such necessities as food, clothing and shelter. After the economy improved, many people wanted material comforts that they had lost or had never earned before, including appliances, a car and a house. Others sought financial security. They stressed the importance of having a job and saving money as a precaution against hard times in the future. The importance of material comforts and financial security that developed among man people of the depression generation affected their relationship with their children. Most people who grew up during the 1950s and 1960s did not know the experience of being wiped out. They knew nothing about having to struggle for money and a job. They did not understand why their parents put such great importance on material possessions and financed security. Many young people criticized such attitudes of their parents. A lack of both understanding and communication helped create what became known as the â€Å"generation gap† of the 1960s and early 1970s (Anderson 6; Coy 32; Samuelson 53; Smitha 89; Bernanke 57; Sides 35). Educationally Driven Assimilation Essay -- Education, Politics

The United States educational system has existed nearly unchanged for hundreds of years. As the system itself remains the same, the content in courses has not. The discussion of what courses should and should not be required or even offered has shifted into a question of politics. As the movement towards becoming more politically correct has expanded, so has its influence upon the educational system. Education on racial issues, which was once deemed as necessary, are now being removed out. A university that feeds on fear-driven proposals offered by the politically correct movement ultimately decides to remove courses that may be falsely perceived as discriminatory. There is a single question that must be asked due to this new trend. Is political correctness being used to target and remove racial issues from the classroom in an attempt to assimilate all cultures? Using three arguments, this paper will seek to support the idea that forcing political correctness into a classroom removes racial issues, and attempts to assimilate minorities. First, political correctness demands modification of both the educational structure, and of the student. Second, political correctness assimilates both the language and actions of individuals. Third, a discussion of white dominance is required to stop a forced assimilation and create a mutual respect of differences instead. Although being politically correct appears to be good on face, the concept can be weaponized in an attempt to halt unwanted discussion. A highly regarded professor from Harvard was ultimately forced to stop offering his class â€Å"Peopling of America† due to its focus on racial issues. (Taylor, 198). Although the Harvard professor was teaching the same course that ... ...the ideals of political correctness target and assimilate cultural differences. The ideals of being PC require followers to think alike, act alike, discuss things alike, and avoid all of the same questions. Uniformity is not the answer to solving cultural differences. When uniformity is preferred it creates a binary that allows individuals to be considered part of the group or different. It is this categorization of individuals that allows the elite to manipulate and oppress against individuals in the United States. The elites can target a group and the majority will find it justified as that group is not part of the unified. The alternative, however, is to allow discussions of difference to occur. If our society can grow to respect differences instead of try to assimilate them, then we will ultimately have a whole group that can include any form of minority.

Importance in the Handmaid’s tale Essay

Explore the ways in which religion is presented and its importance in the Handmaid’s tale. Religion is presented in a numerous amount of ways in the Handmaid’s tale. Christianity or Puritanism is the leading faith in Gilead and is portrayed as a controlling mechanism, which not only controls people’s bodies but strives to control their minds. Inside Gilead biblical and religious references act as fundamental laws and polices towards the controlling regime of Gilead. The people within the regime of Gilead are subjected to harsh and rigid lifestyles. This is justified by the leaders of Gilead by the use of the bible. From Offred’s perspective we can see the strictness of the regime that she lives in. For example â€Å"They can hit us there is scriptural precedent†. Atwood clearly displays the theme of fundamentalism to demonstrate the ideologies of those that impose the rules Gilead. Offred’s perspective often gives the reader an insight into how one would feel if put in the situation of having the regime of Gilead imposed on them. Offred describes some of her actions when she is alone in her room, â€Å"I can spend minutes, tens of minutes running my eyes over the print FAITH†. This emphases to the reader the notion of hope and that if Offred is going to escape or survive the regime with her sanity intact she needs to have â€Å"faith†. Weather that is religious faith in the religion she has come to hate or alternatively it may be faith in herself that she can survive even in this time of dyer. Handmaids wear the colour red which signifies life, lust and love. However in this colour Offred sees herself as a â€Å"sister dipped in blood† this is ironic as â€Å"sister† is referring to a nun. Handmaids share many aspects of their lifestyles with living in a nunnery. For example the solitude and the excessive covering up of body parts. However there is one lifestyle trade that handmaids and nuns do not share. While nuns take a vow of celibacy, the sole purpose of Handmaid’s is to have sexual intercourse. This view of Offred presents irony. In addition to this the use of â€Å"blood† may give the reader connotations of sin and misconduct. This reveals that Offred believes what she is doing is wrong and sinful. In addition to Offred’s perspective, religion as a theme is introduce in the society of Gilead. While religion may be introduced through a controlling means to justify the polices of the regime. But in Gilead it is not so much seen as practical part of life. For example many parts of religion that one would associate with the modern day do not exist in the world of Gilead. For example in Gilead â€Å"the church is a small one†¦ It isn’t used any more, except as a museum. † This demonstrates that Gilead is only theoretically religious and doesn’t practice many practical elements of religion like going to church as they are not used in the world of Gilead. In addition to this Offred also shows that nunneries do not exist in the regime of Gilead. â€Å"time is measured in bells, as once in nunneries†. By saying â€Å"as once in nunneries† it reveals that they are not around anymore. This shows another practical element of religion that has been abolished. Not only have the leaders of Gilead used the bible as political justification to their regime they have also invented new parts of the bible to further control people. â€Å"Blessed are the silent. I knew they made that up, I knew it was wrong, and they left things out too, but there was no way of checking. † The fact that Gilead has made up new parts of the bible shows the leader have used fundamentalism as an excuse for the creation of the regime. In addition to this the fact that women had no way of checking shows they have no access to bibles therefore another practical part of religion is not in practise. Religion is presents the main strengths that Gilead uses to control the different positions and is used as a justification method. However religion is also what defeats Gilead as this is what gives Offred hope and faith.

Struck, which opened its first store outside of North America in Toss's Gina district nearly 20 years ago, said it expects the deal to immediately add to its results, excluding certain items. The transactions are expected to be fully completed in the first half of calendar 2015†³ (Beckmann, 2014, par a. 6). Its expanded investment with China/ Pacific-Asia and the acquisition of Struck Japan will also prove to be a success because not only do they want to expand their business, but more importantly they want to do it the right way to fulfill their mission in helping the world become a little better one neighborhood at a time.

Here I thought Nimrod was a compliment! Here I thought â€Å"Nimrod† was a compliment! Here I thought â€Å"Nimrod† was a compliment! By Maeve Maddox By now you know that I’m not deeply versed in slang. When I read in the newspaper about a dust-up over an email in which a radio news director called a political candidate a â€Å"nimrod,† I couldn’t understand why the word was being decried as â€Å"derogatory.† Now I know. The meaning I’ve always attached to the word Nimrod is â€Å"a skilled hunter.† That’s the meaning with which it is used in the books I’ve seen it in. This sense comes from the Bible. And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD. Genesis 8-9 The citations for Nimrod=hunter in the OED include one as recent as 1994: Towns such as Eagle, Glenwood Springs..and Gunnison throw out the welcome mat for this horde of nimrods. 1994 Denver Post Oct. B9/1 Here nimrods is being used as a synonym for hunters. As early as 1933, however, the lowercase word nimrod acquired a secondary meaning: N. Amer. slang. A stupid or contemptible person; an idiot. OED When I said I’d never seen â€Å"nimrod† used with the sense of â€Å"dummy,† I had apparently blocked out seeing it in the most recent novel I’ve read, a picaresque romp by Christopher Moore called Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal: The Lord doesnt give a damn what a chicken does on the Sabbath, you nimrod! Discussions of the Parts of a Speech In classical rhetoric, the parts of a speech are the conventional divisions of a speech (or oration)- also known as arrangement. Roman orators recognized as many as seven parts: ExordiumNarratioDivisionProof (or Confirmation)RefutationDigressionPerorationEpilogue In contemporary public speaking, the major parts of a speech are often identified more simply as the introduction, body, transitions, and conclusion. See Examples and Observations below. (Dont confuse the parts of a speech in rhetoric with the parts of speech in grammar.) Examples and Observations From late fifth through late second century BCE, three traditions of handbooks characterized theory and instruction in rhetoric. Handbooks in the earliest tradition organized precepts in segments devoted to the parts of a speech. . . . [A] number of scholars have proposed that early handbooks in this tradition typically dealt with four speech parts: a proem that secured an attentive, intelligent, and benevolent hearing; a narration that represented facts of the judicial case favorable to the speaker; a proof that confirmed the speakers claims and refuted the arguments of the opponent; and an epilogue that summarized the speakers arguments and aroused emotions in the audience favorable to the speakers case.(Robert N. Wiley-Blackwell, 2007) The parts of a speech (partes orationis) are the exordium or opening, the narratio or statement of facts, the divisio or partitio, that is, the statement of the point at issue and exposition of what the orator proposes to prove, the confirmatio or exposition of arguments, the confutatio or refutation of ones opponents arguments, and finally the conclusio or peroration. This six-fold division is that given in De Inventione and Ad Herrenium, but Cicero tells us that some divided into four or five or even seven parts, and Quintilian regards partitio as contained in the third part, which he calls probatio, proof, and thus is left with a total of five.(M. Routledge, 1996) Classical Divisions in Prose The classical tradition of oratory was carried on for a great many centuries in oral performance. It was also carried on in written texts, most purely in written works that take the form of orations. Although they were not intended for oral performance, they translate features of oratory to the written word. Including some sense of the writer and the reader.Erasmuss Praise of Folly (1509) is a model example. It follows a form of the classical tradition, with Exordium, Narration, Partition, Confirmation, and Peroration. The orator is Folly, and she steps forward to speak to the crowded assembly that is her audienceall of us readers.(James Thorpe, The Sense of Style: Reading English Prose. University of Georgia Press, 1961) Transitions in Contemporary Speeches To move from one to another of the three major parts of a speech (i.e., introduction, body, and conclusion), you can signal your audience with statements that summarize what youve said in one part and point the way to the next. For example, here is an internal summary and a transition between the body of a speech and the conclusion: Ive now explained in some detail why we need stronger educational and health programs for new immigrants. Let me close by reminding you of whats at stake. . . . Transitions are vital to effective speaking. The Bauhaus was designed to combine the elements of design and fine arts education. The curriculum started with a preliminary course that provided a brief background to the students who were admitted from a wide range of social and educational framework. The preliminary course was taught by veteran visual artists such as Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Josef Albers among others. The immersion of the students in the Bauhaus educational framework allowed them to participate in specialized workshops. The workshops often included cabinetmaking, metalworking, pottery, weaving, wall painting and typography (Raizman 188). Even though the initial aim of the Bauhaus was to unify the arts through craft, the aspects of the approach proved financially impractical. Gropius found it important to maintain the aim of the Bauhaus and decided to reposition its goals in 1923. He stressed on the benefits of designing for mass production and encouraged the school to adopt the â€Å"Art into Industry† slogan. The Bauhaus later moved from Weimar to Dessau in 1925, where Gropius set up a new building to accommodate the school.
